Mrs. Zdenka Smochilovich, a still-young widow, is on the lookout for a new husband. The options turn out to be surprisingly interesting and unexpectedly difficult to choose from:
– an artistic drunkard;
– a refined diplomat;
– a charming athlete who, due to a training injury, can no longer fulfill his marital duties;
– a hopelessly dumb country bumpkin, but still very potent;
– a plastic surgeon with connections to the British royal court.

The final decision she reaches is so unpredictable that even Mrs. Zdenka herself is surprised.
